A Call for Water Protectors to Stop Sabal Trail!

Action Days: Dec 28 thru Jan 2, and January 14-15th Peaceful Civil Disobedience

The Sabal Trail Pipeline is FlorIda’s DAPL:
A Scheme by Private Utility Monopoly FPL & Cohorts to Profit at Public Expense, Threatening Our Water, the Environment and the Economy!

Crossing three states, Alabama, Georgia and Florida, the Sabal Trail Pipeline is intended to transport natural gas (aka, fracked methane). including fracking investments in Oklahoma and Pennsylvania. Compression stations and facilities are going in near ports to facilitate export sales to other countries. The Sabal Trail Pipeline project, jointly owned by Spectra Energy, Duke, and FPL’s parent company, NextEra, and paid for by utility customers, threatens Florida’s fragile geology and network of springs, rivers, caverns and one of the world’s largest aquifers, the Floridan Aquifer that spans Florida and portions of 4 more states, and upon which we depend for much of our agricultural and drinking water in Florida.

Spectra Energy, the company charged with operating the pipeline, has an extremely poor safety record with a history of spills, leaks, fires, explosions and negligence. The pipeline is approaching the final phase of construction, connecting its N. FL construction head to another pipeline or rail line near Lake Okeechobee, the final leg to the ports. It is scheduled to be completed by February and operational by May, or possibly.

Additional controversy concerns questions about improperly approved Environmental Impact Statements, and the legality of eminent domain evictions of 160 properties, particularly because the gas appears to be for private profit gained by export, and not for domestic use. Governor Scott has approved the pipeline, in which he is financially invested, in a blatant disregard for conflict of interest.

The Green Party of Florida calls for clean renewable energy and a stop to further pipelines. Sabal Trail threatens our water, environment, and climate, forcefully takes private property, charges utility customers, and delays green energy by over-building infrastructure for needless fossil fuel.

We want to #StopSabalTrail pipeline, a natural gas pipeline that will threaten the lands, waters (including aquifers, watersheds, rivers, springs, ponds, wetlands), our environment and flora & fauna in three states. Over 160 eminent domain lawsuits have been filed. Citizens’ properties are being seized to complete this project. Most of the people that live closest to the pipeline are not even aware that it is being installed.
Natural Gas would be transported on commuter trains and the entire system will consist of staging areas, compressor stations and areas to process and export the natural gas. One of the latter is close to a nuclear power plant. This puts lives in danger. The human impact cannot even be estimated at this time and could occur from mistakes such as work hazards, derailments and possible explosions.
We don’t have much time, perhaps weeks as Sabal Trail under Spectra and other parent Big Oil and Gas companies have already broken ground in three states: Alabama, Georgia and Florida. The pipes are being installed rapidly and in multiple locations throughout the three states right now. This pipeline is expected to be operational by June of 2017.
It is important to note that this pipeline has been APPROVED. There is no more asking nicely from elected representatives. They can’t help us. We need to move forward in an attempt to save our future.
We all want the same things for our families. Clean lands, pure water and air, properties untainted by chemicals or gasses, an ability to farm, safety for our children, animals, plants and endangered species so they can all thrive. We want to leave the beauty of this region even better for the next generations.
The time is now.
