Green Party of Florida calls for Peace Treaty Process on Korean Peninsula

Green Party of Florida calls for a Peace Treaty Process on the Korean Peninsula

August 24, 2017

The Green Party of Florida joins the United States and South Korean Green Parties in calling for a political and diplomatic solution to the Korean War instead of further militarization of the situation. Green Parties across the world have called for global nuclear disarmament and a transfer of military funding to humanitarian programs including the fight against climate change.

Further escalation of military tensions on the Korean Peninsula does nothing to honor the sacrifice of the more than 35,000 United States service members who have already given their lives, or the more than 100,000 service members wounded in action in the Korean War. The Green Party of Florida remembers the over three million global citizens whose lives have already been ended by this conflict. The Green Party of Florida acknowledges the plight of the citizens of North Korea, who remain among the world’s poorest and most internationally isolated.

The Green Party of Florida demands that the United States government exhaust all diplomatic and political solutions to the Korean War before threating a return to open and active hostilities. The Green Party of Florida supports a suspension of U. S. and South Korean joint military exercises on the Korean Peninsula that serve only to make North Korea feel threatened and do not advance the cause of peace. The Green Party of Florida supports a return to the United Nations Security Council plus China sponsored Peace Treaty Process with the goals of the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and a Peace Treaty which ends the Korean War and provides both North and South Korea with a peaceful road map to future success and prosperity.

Legislative Agenda – Green Party recommendations

The Green Party of Florida recommends the following response to the upcoming House and Senate proposed bills in whatever method or methods you can best manage :

1) People can visit locally now until March 6th and locals and/or individuals should endeavor to contact their legislators about these current bills via phone emails or post a letter in the mail. Calls are the easiest. Emails are recorded I suppose, but actual written letters have to be kept on file.

2) Attend town meetings.

3) Meeting in small groups of 2 -6 people with the elected rep (or their aides) with a good speaker to bring up the wishes and one other to take notes on the response.

4) Be vocal with social  media and other areas where you communicate at work, school,  etc.

5) Be sure to register to vote and urge others to do the same. If our votes did not matter they would not spend so much to try and buy them or suppress them.

6) The session starts March 7th, so join a coalition (or go as united Greens) and lobby in Tallahassee.

7) The Senate is identified as the primary focus, as there are new senators and less senators to lobby. If we can block bills with this group, the bills will not pass into law, even if the whole house votes yes for them.

Strongly suggest that we bring back the Intangible Tax here on Florida which is a tax on EXCESS wealth (it was abolished under Gov. Jeb Bush)

Push for the implementation of SB90 which is the Solar Tax exemption.

Bills we support:

Florida Homeless Bill of Rights

HB 451/SB 442 Fracking ban – of course!!

HB 387/SB 458 Create a Criminal Justice Task Force.

HB51/SN 270 and HB53 /SB 934 – Ex – felon Voting Rights Restoration

HB93/SB 162 Ban plastic bags in coastal communities of 100,000 or less – it’s a start!

HB 319/SB 410 Equal and fair pay for all genders.

HB623/SB 666 No discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Bills we Oppose:

HB 17  (no Senate Bill – which is good!) Destruction of grassroots control – this bill weakens local government’s ability to regulate !

HB 697/ SB Bans sanctuary cities for immigrants.

SB 622 Guns on campuses (no house bill which is good)

HB 351/ SB 478  Secrecy Act which by passes the Sunshine Law

HB 373/ SB 856 Unfair to the best teachers.

HB 11  (no Senate Bill ) HB 599 and SB 534 These bills weaken unions – which, of course,  we need for living wages and benefits.

HB 819/SB 610 Punishes businesses for making safety choice about guns on their property.

For more information on these bills and any others, visit MyFlorida.Com  and put the bill number into the search at the top left of the page.

Note HB = House Bill and SB + Senate Bill

In addition, there will be a statewide citizens’ lobby day (March 21-22) to support a ban on fracking and to protect water and restore the Everglades, as well as to push enforcement of clean energy Amendment 4 that passed last August.

Student Leader, Jared Austin, Kicks Off State Green Party Annual Meeting

As many of you know environmental degradation is no single issue, it is embedded in the same system that has plagued workers, minorities, and various other oppressed groups for going on centuries; this system, of course, is capitalism and it was this realization within our organization that got us much closer to the actual Green Party platform and got us into the streets.

wThis young student organizer and president and founder of Green Party Alliance of USF, launched our annual state conference with this thoughtful opening speech, where he spoke of the systemic problems of capitalism and imperialism and of the actions he and his fellow student greens and activists are taking on, including calling for USF to divest from all fossil fuel use and investments by 2020. He speaks eloquently about the bigger picture as well as concrete efforts on the ground and the work ahead for all of us working for a fair, just and sustainable future.

Jared Austin, president of the Green Party Alliance, USF.

Good afternoon, I want to first thank Cathy Gilbert and Josh Pritchett for allowing the Green Party Alliance at USF to host this wonderful event today, our organization is truly honored and excited especially given where we began, the current state of the world today and given what events like today will mean in the future. I would also like to thank the members of the Tampa chapter of the Green Party who saw a young student passionate Continue reading “Student Leader, Jared Austin, Kicks Off State Green Party Annual Meeting”
