Third Party Spoiler Myth and the Solution called “Rank Choice Voting”

David Morales, a high school student who wrote a report on Proportional Representation asked us to post his paper on our website. It gives me great hope for the future in that we have Green Youth such as David and others like him who are getting involved now to help create positive change for the future of our country and the world. Thanks David! CLICK HERE FOR DAVID’S REPORT

The United States falls victim to a system of voting which does not truly represent its people. In the United States we use a system called “First Past the Post” or FPTP. FPTP presents a system in which voters elect the candidate with the most votes to win the election. A seemingly simple, fair and logical system and yet it presents a multitude of issues. FPTP seems natural to us because it provides a winner based on the person with the most votes: the winner, however, in most scenarios problems arise when this system is used to vote. For example, the majority of voters will inevitably be left without a voice.

Our voting system is a “winner take all” system and discourages people from even bothering to vote. Notwithstanding the Electoral College, in which the Green Party calls for reforming.

I’d like to also post here, a link to a youtube video David Cobb created for the Jill/Baraka campaign concerning this topic of Rank Choice Voting (RCV).

There is Instant Runoff Voting (IRV), Proportional Representation, which David Morales writes about (STV – Single Transferable Vote), and other forms of voting that are similar in nature. This is the only way a third party will be recognized in our country and the only way the people’s voice will be heard and counted. We have a responsibility and this is our civic duty to ensure that we get a bill passed which enables our voice and our choice be heard. Contact your State Legislators today by writing them to enact a bill. It could be something as simple as a letter like this. CLICK HERE.

No party has claim to my vote. To call my vote for a third party a “spoiler” is disrespectful to my freedom as an American Citizen to vote for who I think best represents myself and my community.

how the world sees us

These two clowns are not our only choices!

Voting for the less of two evils has lead us to this dark place we see on television during the debate between Clinton and Trump, a pathetic mockery and embarrassment to Americans.

They do not represent us, they represent big money, the military industrial complex President Eisenhower warned us about and all that’s wrong with our society. The League of Women’s Voters call the Presidential Debate Commission a farce and call for third party’s to be heard in debates. We have let the wolves take over the chicken coup and it’s no one’s fault but our own.

Student Leader, Jared Austin, Kicks Off State Green Party Annual Meeting

As many of you know environmental degradation is no single issue, it is embedded in the same system that has plagued workers, minorities, and various other oppressed groups for going on centuries; this system, of course, is capitalism and it was this realization within our organization that got us much closer to the actual Green Party platform and got us into the streets.

wThis young student organizer and president and founder of Green Party Alliance of USF, launched our annual state conference with this thoughtful opening speech, where he spoke of the systemic problems of capitalism and imperialism and of the actions he and his fellow student greens and activists are taking on, including calling for USF to divest from all fossil fuel use and investments by 2020. He speaks eloquently about the bigger picture as well as concrete efforts on the ground and the work ahead for all of us working for a fair, just and sustainable future.

Jared Austin, president of the Green Party Alliance, USF.

Good afternoon, I want to first thank Cathy Gilbert and Josh Pritchett for allowing the Green Party Alliance at USF to host this wonderful event today, our organization is truly honored and excited especially given where we began, the current state of the world today and given what events like today will mean in the future. I would also like to thank the members of the Tampa chapter of the Green Party who saw a young student passionate Continue reading “Student Leader, Jared Austin, Kicks Off State Green Party Annual Meeting”
