Our Children must not live in a Hazard Zone! Florida’s Palm Beach County braces for its anfpnual “burn season,” which begins each year in October and runs for six months at least through March to as late as May. The Florida sugar industry begins its harvest season for 400,000 acres (625 square miles) of sugarcane fields. Assuming a six-month burn season, this means there were approximately 43 fires per day in 2019.
Ballot access for an independent presidential candidate requires at least 2,000 valid signatures. On August 4, 2020, Green Party presidential candidate Howie Hawkins and vice presidential candidate Angela Walker filed 3,996 signatuires. Those signatures were accepted by the State of Wisconsin. Three days later, a complaint was filed on the grounds that Walker had changed her address during the petition period. Although each group of petitions had listed the correct address at the time of their gathering (the only requirement) and the state had been notified of the change, the bogus challenge was accepted. On a 6–0 vote, the Wisconsin Election Commission subsequently removed Hawkins and Walker from the Wisconsin ballot.

A hashtag. A response. An outrage. Heartfelt. It ignited. It moved. #Blacklivesmatter resonated with individuals that repeatedly watched Black lives executed by hands of police or White folks who used their privilege to murder unarmed Black lives. In 2013, after the acquittal of George Zimmerman for the unnecessary slaughter of Trayvon Martin, Alicia Garza posted using the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter — and the rest is history. #BLM became a passion. Black Lives Matter started as a movement in a moment and became a principle. Black Lives Matter is a profound statement. A declaration. We have witnessed a profound uprising by those ignited by the fire of Black Lives Matter! Therefore, my question to those who are calling for the disregard of #BLM is: Shouldn’t Black lives matter?
At this time of crisis, Hawkins’ message is stark: “Our country needs the Green Party now, because we are living in a failed state, one that is failing us on a multitude of life or death issues, such as the covid Pandemic, and systemic racism, which proves we’re not yet a multicultural democracy. Economic inequality is a life-and-death issue for people on the bottom of the income spectrum. The life or death of the entire planet is threatened by the climate emergency, and by the nuclear arms race. So stated retired UPS worker Howie Hawkins on July 11, while accepting the presidential nomination of the Green Party of the United States before over 350 online delegates from 43 states. Hawkins had won on the first round with over 59% of the vote against the combined total of 4 other recognized contenders. Also acclaimed was Hawkins’ vice-presidential running mate Angela Walker, a fiery Black queer truck driver from South Carolina.
